Step 1: Define How You Want to Feel in the Space

Before thinking about aesthetics, start with emotion. How do you want to feel when you walk into this room? Should it be calm and cozy? Vibrant and social? Inspired and creative? Jot down a few words that capture your vision—these will help guide every decision you make.

Step 2: Identify the Highest Use of the Room

Next, think about the practical side. What is the main purpose of this space? Is it a gathering place for family? A quiet retreat at the end of the day? A workspace where you need focus? A room’s function should always be at the heart of its design.

Once you’ve identified both the feeling and the function, you’ll have a clearer direction for choosing colors, furniture, and decor that actually serve your needs.

Step 3: Start with an Anchor Piece

One of the easiest ways to bring a space together is to start with one key piece you love and build around it. This could be:

  • A favorite color that makes you happy.

  • A piece of art that inspires you.

  • A rug or pillow with a pattern you adore.

  • A piece of furniture that feels timeless and comfortable.

Once you have your anchor piece, use it to inform the rest of the space—choosing complementary colors, textures, and accents that bring everything together effortlessly.
